British action drama starring Saoirse Ronan. Understandably cold
and aggressive after being shipped off to Britain from America to
stay with her distant relatives, Daisy (Ronan) is initially weary
of her new home in the English countryside, but as a relationship
develops between Daisy and her cousin Edmond (George MacKay), she
starts warming to her new surroundings. Left to their own devices
while her Aunt Penn (Anna Chancellor) is abroad involved in peace
negotiations, the group enjoy their idyllic surroundings and
isolation from parental influence. However, when World War Three
breaks out over Europe and Britain is taken over by military
forces, the group is split up and detained in prisoner-of-war
camps. With nothing left to lose, Daisy begins planning her escape
in the hope of reuniting with her lover, but with war taking its
toll on everyone throughout the country, she grows fearful of what
she may find...
Archaeology is in crisis. Spatial turns, material turns and the
ontological turn have directed the discipline away from its
hard-won battle to find humanity in the past. Meanwhile,
popularised science, camouflaged as archaeology, produces shock
headlines built on ancient DNA analyses that reduce humanity’s
most intriguing historical problems to ‘just-so stories’. Today
archaeology finds itself less able than ever to proclaim its
relevance to the modern world. This volume foregrounds the
relevance of the scholarship of John C. Barrett to this crisis.
Twenty-four writers representing three generations of
archaeologists scrutinise the current turmoil in the discipline and
highlight the resolutions that may be found through Barrett’s
analytical framework. Topics include archaeology and the senses,
the continuing problem of the archaeological record, practice,
discourse and agency, reorienting archaeological field practice,
the question of different expressions of human diversity and
material ecologies. Understanding archaeology as both a universal
and highly specific discipline, case studies range from the Aegean
to Orkney, and encompass Anatolia, Korea, Romania, the United
Kingdom and the very nature of the Universe itself. This critical
examination of John Barrett’s contribution to archaeology is
simultaneously a response to his urgent call to arms to reorient
archaeology in the service of humanity.
This volume contains the papers selected for presentationat IPCO
VI, the Sixth InternationalConferenceonInteger
ProgrammingandCombinatorialOptimi- tion,held inHouston,Texas,USA,
June22{24,1998.TheIPCOseriesofconf- ences highlights recent
developments in theory, computation, and applications of integer
programming and combinatorial optimization. These conferences are
sponsoredby the Mathematical ProgrammingSociety, and are held in
the years in which no International Symosium on Mathema- cal
Programming takes place. Earlier IPCO conferences were held in
Waterloo (Canada) in May 1990; Pittsburgh (USA) in May 1992; Erice
(Italy) in April 1993; Copenhagen (Denmark) in May 1995; and
Vancouver (Canada) in June 1996. The proceedings of IPCO IV (edited
by Egon Balas and Jens Clausen in 1995) and IPCO V (edited by
William Cunningham, Thomas McCormick, and Maurice Queyranne in
1996), were published by Springer-Verlag in the series Lecture
Notes in Computer Science as Volumes 920 and 1084, respectively.
The proceedings of the rst three IPCO conferences were published by
organizing institutions. A total of77 extended abstracts, mostly of
an excellentquality, wereinitially submitted. Following the IPCO
policy of having only one stream of sessions over a three day span,
the ProgramCommittee selected 32 papers. As a result, many
outstanding papers could not be selected. The papers included in
this volume have not been refereed. It is expected that revised
versions of these works will appear in scienti c journals. The
Program Committee thanks all the authors of submitted extended -
stracts and papers for their support of the IPCO conferences.
